I’m the lab manager here in the department of Physics and Astronomy, and I am asked quite often what exactly I do. Mostly it is taking care of all the computers in the department: hardware, software, networking, plus removing the viruses, trojans, and spyware that are rampant on the Internet. I also set up labs, repair equipment, purchase items, aid in student research, and coordinate dealings with other departments in varying aspects. There are also many smaller things that are too numerous to list.

Since I am in charge of keeping the computers up and running, here is a list of my favorite utilities and tools to keep your computer running free of harm.

  1. SpySweeper » Best spyware removal tool by far, and the only one you’ll ever need!!! For free software try SpyBot and use the immunize tool.
  2. ZoneAlarm firewall » This is free.
  3. Norton AntiVirus » Updates are frequent, thorough, and timely. For free software, try AVG.
  4. OpenOffice » Why pay Microsoft for a product that a free open source one can do just as well!
  5. Firefox Web browser » Free from Mozilla to replace, in most instances, Internet Explorer. There have been way too many attacks on IE, so I have moved the labs to Firefox. Download the extension that lets you open a Web page with IE if needed, as well.
  6. Thunderbird e-mail client » Why not replace the buggy Outlook Express as well! Great replacement, very similar to OE, and free!
  7. Irfanview » Picture viewer, converter, makes slide shows, and even plays videos! Oh, and it’s free too!
